When using a spinnerbait is there a limit on how deep I can fish?

The spinnerbait is a versatile lure that can be fished at a variety of depths.  It is best fished in weedy conditions and within 1-3 feet of the water surface.  I have however fished this lure at greater depths by using a slow retrieve speed.

An excellent way to fish this lure in heavy weeds or tree is to allow it to drop in pockets of water as you retrieve it.  There is a lake I fish often that holds Largemouth Bass in fifteen foot deep water with many standing trees.  I often use a spinnerbait and allow it to drop all the way to the bottom near these trees.  Many of the strikes I get occur when the bait is dropping.  I also get many strikes as I begin to retrieve the spinnerbait from a sitting position on the bottom of the lake.

Keep in mind by nature the spinnerbait is a bait designed for the upper 3 feet of the water surface. I have demonstrated that you can catch fish with a spinnerbait at all depths.  I do however believe that you have better choices of artificial baits for deeper water.  A jig and pig for instance I believe is a much better deep water artificial to use in heavy cover.  If there is not heavy cover then a crankbait is also a much better choice.

Try not to get married to one particular artificial bait. I have witnessed several fishermen have success with a particular bait one day and always want to use that bait.  Artificial lures work well for specific reasons.  What is good one day may not be the next as conditions change.

I think you can fish a spinnerbait effectively down to about 30ft with some of the heavy 1oz plus spinnerbaits that are available. They are actually better at covering the 20-30ft water column then a super deep crankbait.
